This lovely book was the basis of a BBC Scotland 3-part mini-series that I finally got a chance to see. A must for my library. Used, and in in very good 5/5(2). This book deserves a five-star rating for its visual story of life in the eyes of a boy during the depression on Harris Isle. I could almost hear the Gaelic accent purr along throughout the book. This character-driven narrative had me spell-bound from the very beginning to the author's metaphoric definition of "Crowdie and Cream."5/5(3). Crowdie is generally understood to refer to a type of soft, fresh Scottish curd cheese made from skimmed cows' milk, although the name is sometimes used to refer to a type of brose (an uncooked porridge) made from ground oats and cold water..
